Guest interview for voyage houston magazine

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind in the best way.

Prior to my recent self-care retreat, I had the honor of being interviewed by Voyage Houston. We talked about how Sapo Wellness came to be, what the goals are for my private practice, and how I hope to bring talk therapy, neuroscience, and sports science together via evidence-based care to maximize whole-body wellness. Who would have thought that someone would take an interest in little ole’ me!

Our mental and physical health are intimately connected - not siloed like most healthcare models would have us believe. By learning more about the “why” behind why we do what we do we can remove the shame that keeps us feeling small. We then open ourselves to adapting new habits (with whimsy!) that help us grow into the people we know we can be, and no longer buy into the stories we’ve been told of who we should be to fit someone else’s preferences. We leverage what we have available - how we move our bodies, what we consume (on and off the plate), and how we find rest and relaxation - all things that can be low to no cost to us.

Movement is medicine, but it’s not able to be bottled up and sold to the masses. It’s not a single-dose situation or a daily peptide to take. It requires effort and intention, something that can seem daunting when the world is already taking a lot of what we have.

The beauty is, once we overcome that initial resistance, taking care of ourselves stops being a task and starts being a desire - something you look forward to doing. Exercise builds more than just our muscles - it builds our brains (literally!), our discipline, and our capacity to tolerate discomfort in the name of solid growth. Choosing to take care of yourself first may feel selfish if you’ve never done it before, but I assure you, it gets a lot easier. Boundaries are necessary for autonomy. You learn how much you can (and want) to give, when to pull back, and how to honor yourself in ways that feed your soul.

Interestingly enough, once you learn to choose yourself you might want to help others out even more - only this time it’s because you WANT to, not because you feel you HAVE to. Exercise is but one tool that helps you build this. If you’re building solid nutrition and managing stress, too, you’re setting yourself up for longevity and a kick ass quality of life.

Let’s get moving.
